New Waste collection contract discussion forum

Talking Rubbish Week 3

We all produce it, we don't like it but we have to deal with it.  As your principal authority Herefordshire Council disposes of your waste on a weekly basis and provides you with opportunities to recycle through kerbside collections and bring sites.

We currently recycle 30% of our waste in Herefordshire and this is down to YOU as local residents, doing your bit for the environment.  But we want and need to do more.  Government has set us the target to recycle 40% of our rubbish by 2010 and we are confident that with your help we can achieve this.

At the moment we think we should carry on collecting our residual waste (black bag rubbish) weekly. We would like to know what you think about this proposal, as many Councils have decided to collect their residual waste fortnightly.

We would, however, like to change the household recycling collection to be fortnightly.

This would mean we can provide kerbside recycling to every household in the County, not just the current 72%.

To do this we are proposing, where possible, to give you a wheeled bin to hold mixed recyclables. We will need to use wheeled bins because we can't collect glass in bags for obvious safety reasons.

You can put in this bin not only glass but different types of plastic (not just bottles), cans, paper, card, cardboard and other carton-type packaging.

Unfortunately we will have to stop collecting textiles kerbside, but we will make textile and clothing recycling banks available across the County and retain the services we currently offer at our Household Waste Sites.

As well as your opinion on the above, we would like your views on using a wheeled bin instead of a black bag for your weekly rubbish collection.

This forum is an opportunity to discuss with us and other participant's ideas about recycling, waste reduction ... anything to do with RUBBISH. Simply register (following the instructions) and tell us what your thoughts and ideas are. Any questions to us will be answered as quickly as possible (within one day) as long as we have the answer.

This Discussion Forum is now closed.  We will post feedback later on in the autumn but until then a big thank you to everyone who took the time to respond.
